In the transsexual life in the 1970's, passing is a necessity. Anyone that the police can detect will be arrested. Betty Jo is young, pretty, infatuated with the city and wants to embrace life and love with a nice guy. Her obstacle is that, yes, she was once a boy. Betty Jo survives the disasters that follow every girl of her type with cheerful determination. Her perspectives as she moves from childhood to adulthood, surgery and beyond to love are often comic, sometimes insightful if slightly skewed. Her San Francisco trans neighborhood and friends are colorful and exotic. Can Betty become a ‘real’ woman or at least an ‘almost’ woman? It seems at last that hope is in vain, but then Betty meets Keith… a ‘gets what he wants’ kind of man with a keen desire for her. His love, assertive hunger and wry humor guide Betty onto a path of self-acceptance. ‘Almost’ is a truthful, sharp, witty and optimistic romp through the vagaries of a shadow life.

Almost A transsexual novel edition by Lettie Zeste Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Not my cup of tea. Thought the book would give more insight into the emotional side of being transgender.
There are some works that make it onto the bookshelf of my heart. Some examples would be Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables," Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle," Potok's "The Chosen," Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness," Donoghue's "Life Mask" and Ondaatje's "The English Patient." Works that aren't for everyone, but, for me, are priceless. On that shelf now goes "Almost." Thank you, L. Zeste, for being gracious enough to share your talent.
This is possibly the worst book I’ve ever read, or attempted to read. Nothing but random thoughts, musings, daydreams, and night dreams clog up the majority of the pages, so much so that I had to re-read many pages over just to discern whether I was reading about an actual scene or yet more of her rambling daydreaming. The main character, Jo Jo/Bettie Jo, is the only character that has any depth, as the remainder of the cast are shallow and one-dimensional at best. Not only does the book get lost with her constant inner thoughts, but it also jumps around chronologically as well. Present day, 10 years in the future, 10 years in the past, and everywhere in between. I had so much trouble following who, what, where, and when. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the unending streams of adjectives describing every little aspect about everything in excruciating detail. Long-winded descriptions of SO many things that were completely and totally irrelevant. I would understand if these boring monologues had something to do with the story or the situation, but they rarely (if ever) did. I finally had had enough at the 50% mark, as I really and truly tried to give it an honest chance, but it never got any better. Rambling, confusing, back-and-forth timelines, and utterly nonsensical thoughts and diatribes all contribute to a complete waste of my time. And I don’t feel I’m being overly critical, either...in the 400+ book reviews I’ve written here on , this is only the third one-star rating I’ve given.
""Almost is a compelling fiction novel depicting a transgender struggling to find a life of normality and love. I highly recommend this book.
